About Labor-Only Moving

What is a labor-only moving service?

A labor-only moving service - sometimes called moving labor, moving helpers, or hire-a-mover - provides a professional crew who handles all the physical work of your move: loading, unloading, carrying heavy furniture, navigating stairs, and packing boxes. The key difference from a full-service moving company is that we do not supply the truck or container. You arrange your own rental - a U-Haul, Budget, Penske, PODS, or any other option - and our trained crew does all the heavy lifting. Because you control the truck rental separately, you eliminate the biggest markup in traditional moving quotes. Labor-only moving is the most cost-effective way to move in Portland, and it puts you in full control of your timeline and budget. You drive, we do the work.

How much does labor-only moving cost in Portland?

Labor-only moving in Portland is significantly more affordable than hiring a full-service moving company. MoveMaker Northwest charges an hourly rate per mover, with a minimum booking of 2 movers for 2 hours. The total cost of your move depends on three factors: the number of movers needed (determined by the size and weight of your belongings), the number of hours the job takes, and whether you need any add-on services like packing or furniture disassembly. A studio or one-bedroom apartment move typically requires 2 movers and 2–3 hours. A two- or three-bedroom home usually needs 2–3 movers and 3–5 hours. Larger homes or moves with heavy specialty items like pianos or safes may require additional crew. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote and we will give you an honest estimate based on your specific situation - no hidden fees, no surprises.

How much can I save with a labor-only moving service?

Most MoveMaker Northwest customers save between $500 and $2,000 compared to booking a full-service moving company for the same move. Here is why: full-service movers bundle the cost of their truck, fuel, insurance, and company overhead into your quote - and those costs add up fast. With a labor-only service, you rent the truck yourself directly from U-Haul, Budget, or Penske, which typically costs $50–$200 for a local move. You pay MoveMaker Northwest only for the professional labor. The result is a dramatically lower total cost without sacrificing quality or professionalism. You still get an experienced, insured crew who treats your belongings with care - you just avoid paying the full-service markup. For families, renters, and anyone on a budget, labor-only moving is the smartest financial choice in Portland.

What is the difference between labor-only movers and full-service movers?

Full-service movers handle everything end-to-end: they bring the truck, pack your belongings, load, drive, unload, and sometimes unpack. This convenience comes at a significant cost - full-service moves in Portland can run $1,500 to $5,000 or more depending on the size of your home. Labor-only movers like MoveMaker Northwest provide the professional crew and all the equipment (dollies, straps, moving blankets), but you supply the truck or container. This model is ideal for people who want professional-quality loading and unloading without the full-service price tag. It is especially popular with people who are already renting a U-Haul, using a PODS or 1-800-Pack-Rat container, or moving with a storage unit. If you are comfortable driving a rental truck or have already arranged a container service, labor-only moving gives you the best of both worlds: professional help at a fraction of the cost.

Booking & Scheduling

How far in advance should I book moving help in Portland?

For most moves, we recommend booking at least 3 to 5 business days in advance to secure your preferred date and time slot. Portland's busiest moving periods are weekends, the last week of the month, and the summer months of June through August - during these times, we strongly recommend booking 1 to 2 weeks ahead to guarantee availability. If your move date is flexible, booking early also gives you more options for start times and crew size. That said, we understand that moves do not always go according to plan. We offer same-day and next-day availability when crew slots are open, so if you are in a pinch, call us directly and we will do our best to accommodate you. The easiest way to book is through our online booking calendar, which shows real-time availability.

Do you offer same-day moving help in Portland?

Yes, MoveMaker Northwest offers same-day moving help in Portland when crew availability allows. Same-day bookings cannot be guaranteed in advance, as they depend on whether our crews have open slots on that date. The best way to check for same-day availability is to call us directly - we can confirm within minutes whether we can get a crew to you. Same-day moving help is available for all service types: loading, unloading, packing, and in-home moves. If you have a last-minute move, a lease that ended unexpectedly, or simply forgot to book in advance, do not hesitate to reach out. We will always try to help. For the most reliable experience, we recommend booking at least a few days ahead whenever possible.

What areas do you serve?

MoveMaker Northwest serves the greater Portland metro area and surrounding communities. Our primary service area includes all Portland neighborhoods (North, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest Portland), as well as Vancouver, WA, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Tualatin, Gresham, Troutdale, Oregon City, Milwaukie, and Happy Valley. We also assist with long-distance moves that originate in Portland - we can load your truck or container here even if your destination is out of state. If you are moving to another city where we have a partner team, we may be able to coordinate both the loading and unloading ends of your move. Not sure if we cover your area? Give us a call or send us a message and we will let you know right away.

How do I get a free moving quote?

Getting a free quote from MoveMaker Northwest is quick and easy. You can book directly through our online booking calendar, which walks you through the details of your move and gives you an instant estimate based on crew size and time. Alternatively, you can call us and speak with a team member who will ask a few simple questions - the size of your home, the number of large or heavy items, whether you need packing help, and your preferred move date - and give you an honest, transparent estimate on the spot. We do not charge for quotes and there is no obligation to book. Our pricing is straightforward: an hourly rate per mover with no hidden fees, fuel surcharges, or surprise charges at the end of the job.

The Moving Day

What do I need to provide on moving day?

Your main responsibility on moving day is to have your rental truck or moving container ready, accessible, and parked as close to your front door as possible. MoveMaker Northwest brings all the professional equipment needed for your move - heavy-duty dollies, hand trucks, furniture straps, and moving blankets to protect your belongings. You do not need to supply any tools or moving equipment. It helps to have your items reasonably organized before we arrive: boxes sealed and labeled, loose items grouped together, and any items you do not want moved clearly set aside. If you have fragile or high-value items, let us know in advance so we can take extra precautions. If you need help with packing, we offer professional packing services as an add-on - just let us know when you book.

Do your movers disassemble and reassemble furniture?

Yes, our crew handles basic furniture disassembly and reassembly as a standard part of the service. This includes bed frames (including platform beds, bunk beds, and adjustable bases), desks, dining tables, bookshelves, entertainment centers, and similar flat-pack or bolt-together furniture. We carry basic tools on every job. For more complex items - such as large sectional sofas that need to be taken apart to fit through doorways, custom built-ins, or specialty furniture - we ask that you let us know in advance so we can plan the right approach and allocate enough time. If you have IKEA furniture or other flat-pack pieces that need to be broken down, that is no problem at all. Our goal is to make your move as smooth as possible from start to finish.

What if my move takes longer than expected?

MoveMaker Northwest charges by the hour, so if your move takes longer than the initial estimate, you simply pay for the additional time at the same hourly rate. There are no penalty fees or surprise surcharges for going over time. We will always communicate with you as we approach the end of your originally booked window so you are never caught off guard. Common reasons a move takes longer than expected include more items than originally described, difficult access (long hallways, multiple flights of stairs, tight corners), or the need for extra care with fragile or oversized items. To get the most accurate time estimate, be as detailed as possible when you book - let us know about stairs, elevator access, parking restrictions, and any particularly heavy or bulky items like pianos, safes, or large appliances.

Are your movers insured?

Yes, MoveMaker Northwest carries liability insurance and our crew members are professionally trained in safe moving practices. We take the protection of your belongings seriously on every job. Our movers use high-quality moving blankets to wrap furniture, professional-grade straps to secure items in the truck, and proper two-person lifting techniques to prevent damage to both your belongings and your home. We are careful around doorframes, walls, and flooring. While no moving company can guarantee that accidents will never happen, our track record of 5-star Google reviews reflects our commitment to treating every customer's home and possessions with the same care we would give our own. If you have specific concerns about high-value or fragile items, please let us know when you book so we can take extra precautions.

Do you help with loading and unloading storage units?

Yes, loading and unloading storage units is one of our most common services. Whether you are moving items into a storage facility, clearing out a storage unit, or transferring belongings between units, our crew can handle the heavy lifting. We work with all major storage facility types including indoor climate-controlled units, outdoor drive-up units, and portable storage containers like PODS, 1-800-Pack-Rat, PackRat, and U-Box. If your storage unit is at a facility with elevator access or specific move-in rules, just let us know in advance and we will plan accordingly. Storage unit loading and unloading is billed at the same hourly rate as our standard moving services.

Trucks, Containers & Equipment

What size truck should I rent for my move?

Choosing the right truck size is one of the most important decisions for a smooth, cost-effective move. Here is a general guide based on home size: a 10-foot truck is suitable for a studio apartment or a small one-bedroom with minimal furniture; a 15-foot truck works well for a one-bedroom or small two-bedroom apartment; a 17- to 20-foot truck is the most popular choice for a two- or three-bedroom home with a standard amount of furniture and boxes; a 24- to 26-foot truck is best for a four-bedroom home or any move with a large volume of items, including appliances and outdoor furniture. These are guidelines - the actual amount of furniture, the number of boxes, and whether you have large items like sectional sofas, king-size beds, or gym equipment all affect the right size. If you are unsure, it is almost always better to go one size up. Running out of space mid-move is far more stressful than having a little extra room. Call us and we will help you estimate the right truck size based on what you are moving.

Which truck rental companies do you work with?

MoveMaker Northwest works with all major truck rental companies and container services. For traditional moving trucks, we regularly work with U-Haul, Budget Truck Rental, Penske, Enterprise Truck Rental, and Ryder. For portable storage containers and pod-style moving services, we work with PODS, 1-800-Pack-Rat (1800packrat.com), PackRat, U-Box (from U-Haul), and any other container service. We also assist with moves using cargo vans, pickup trucks with trailers, and commercial freight containers. Regardless of what type of vehicle or container you have arranged, our crew will load or unload it efficiently and carefully. If you have not yet booked your truck or container and want advice on which option makes the most sense for your move, we are happy to help you think through the options.

Can you help with PODS and moving container loading in Portland?

Yes, PODS and moving container loading and unloading is a significant part of our business in Portland. The container model works especially well for people who want flexibility - the container company drops the unit at your home, you schedule our crew to load it at your pace, and then the container is picked up and transported to your new location or a storage facility. We load and unload PODS, 1-800-Pack-Rat, PackRat, U-Box, and all other portable storage container brands. Our crew is experienced in maximizing container space through strategic loading - furniture is positioned to protect against shifting during transport, and boxes are stacked efficiently to make the most of every cubic foot. If you are using a container service and need professional loading or unloading help in the Portland or Vancouver area, we are the crew to call.

Pricing & Payment

How does MoveMaker Northwest charge for moving services?

MoveMaker Northwest charges an hourly rate based on the number of movers assigned to your job. Our pricing is transparent and straightforward - there are no hidden fees, no fuel surcharges, no stair fees, and no charges for using dollies or moving blankets. You pay for the time our crew is actively working on your move, from the moment they arrive at your first location to the moment the last item is placed at your destination. We require a minimum booking of 2 movers for 2 hours. For larger moves, we will recommend the right crew size to complete your move efficiently without unnecessary overtime. All pricing is discussed and confirmed before your move date so you know exactly what to expect.

Are there any hidden fees or extra charges?

No. MoveMaker Northwest does not charge hidden fees. Our hourly rate covers the full service: the crew, all moving equipment (dollies, straps, moving blankets), basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, and careful handling of your belongings. We do not add fuel surcharges, stair fees, long-carry fees, or weekend premiums. The only additional charges that may apply are for optional add-on services such as professional packing, which is discussed and agreed upon before your move date. We believe in honest, upfront pricing because we want you to feel confident and comfortable from the moment you book. If you have any questions about what is and is not included in your quote, just ask - we are happy to walk you through it.
